BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The owner of Battle Creek’s Lakeview Lounge says he was just trying to pay the bills after his business was shut down due to violating COVID-19 orders prohibiting indoor gatherings at restaurants and bars.
Norm Downey told the Battle Creek Enquirer that he doesn’t want anyone to get sick or die and that he also is not forcing customers to come in. But he says he isn’t sure how he can pay $2,000 in bills this month for rent and utilities at his business.
In late December, inspectors entered the bar on two separate occasions and witnessed people inside eating and drinking. On Tuesday, the Michigan Liquor Control Commission suspended the liquor license and ordered Lakeview Lounge on Capital Avenue S.W. to close.
A hearing is scheduled today to determine if the suspension should continue and if other fines and penalties should be imposed.
